What to Expect
Travel reference:

Join an unforgettable whale and dolphin watching tour right on Auckland's doorstep!

Step aboard a 4.5 hour cruise on the luxurious 'Dolphin Explorer' and explore the beautiful Hauraki Gulf Marine Park as you encounter amazing and diverse marine wildlife.

You'll enjoy great views of famous Auckland landmarks like the iconic Harbour Bridge, North Head and Devonport, and volcanic Rangitoto Island from our large open deck. All while watching out for orca and dolphins known to frequent the city-side waters.

As the crew provides knowledgeable commentary on the harbour's ecosystem, marine-science experts conduct biological studies and you're welcome to join interactive research activities.

Every trip is different and the marine wildlife varies from day to day. Typically you'll see Bryde's whales and common dolphins, but you may also meet pygmy blue whales, New Zealand fur seals, sharks, manta rays, turtles and up to 26 species of seabirds - including the little blue penguin.

As you return to Auckland, sit back, take advantage of the licensed cafe and bar, and enjoy the island views. And if you're ready to learn more, there's an optional research presentation.

Assembling arrangement:
  • Meeting point: New Zealand Maritime Museum, 175 Quay Street, Viaduct Harbour

  • Viaduct Harbour is located at the western end (left as you are looking at the water) of Quay Street in downtown Auckland. Upon arrival, you will need to look for the New Zealand Maritime Museum entrance on your right immediately after the large 'KZ1' yacht.

  • All passengers are required to check in at the desk inside the New Zealand Maritime Museum no later than 15 minutes prior to departure time.

  • Public Transport: We strongly encourage the use of public transport (bus, ferry, train) into Auckland city centre for your safari. You can click here to see the public transport options and a journey planner.

  • Car: You can park nearby at the Downtown Car Park, 31 Customs St West, Auckland.

  • Child ticket: Ages 0 - 15 years

  • Children under 5 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.

  • Tour duration: approximately 4.5 hours

  • Tour time: 1:30 pm - 6:00 pm (all year round), 8:00 am - 12:30 pm (January - March)

  • People in light wheelchairs with some mobility can generally be accommodated. The vessel has two stairs in the boarding area that passengers must be able to navigate (with carer support if required). Not all areas and viewing decks are wheelchair accessible. The main level indoor area has a 15cm door sill. The bathrooms have a 15cm door sill and limited space inside. Heavy or motorised wheelchairs are not suitable, as they are too large and heavy to be lifted onto the boat.

  • If you didn't see marine mammals on the cruise, you can join another cruise for free.
