Come and discover the world of the little blue penguin at the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony!
The Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony is home of the smallest penguin in the world, the Blue Penguin. Choose from a day entry ticket, an evening entry ticket or a premium evening entry ticket. If you choose the day entry option, you can go inside the specially-designed viewing room for a chance to see the penguins up close in their burrows. An evening entry pass will allow you to see the penguins swim ashore in their "rafts" and head to their nests near the waterfront. And if you choose the premium evening ticket, you'll get even closer to the action, just 2-3 metres from where the penguins arrive. Regardless of what entry option you choose, your visit contributes to the long-term conservation and research into these cute little creatures.

In the specially-designed viewing room there are 10 nesting boxes that you can look down into and see the penguins inside. The penguins are wild of course and sometimes might all be at sea during the day, so outside of the breeding season there is no guarantee the birds will be home.
When the penguins are breeding, particularly from August until February, there are always penguins home incubating eggs, raising chicks or moulting (shedding old feathers). The daytime viewing activity is self-guided, however there is a guide on hand to answer your questions.
Operating hours: Day Entry to the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony begins at 10:00 am and ends approximately 60 minutes before dusk.
Evening Viewing General Entry:
The birds return home from their days fishing, make their way onto the beach, up a stony ramp, and cross into the Colony. You are seated in a grandstand that seats 350 people. We recommend booking in advance in the summer months.
Operating hours: During the summer months Evening Viewing is as late as 9:00 pm while during the winter the penguins may arrive home as early as 5:30 pm.
Evening Viewing Premium Entry:
With Premium Entry, you will have individual seating which makes the experience more comfortable. When you make your way out to the grandstand you will enter into the breeding colony on a boardwalk and walk amongst their nesting burrows. Premium viewing is restricted to only 60 seats so we recommend booking well in advance.
