What to Expect
Travel reference:

Come enjoy a once in a lifetime experience - swimming with the world's smallest dolphins!

This dolphin cruise will give you a chance to watch or swim with the endangered Hector's dolphins right in their natural habitat in Akaroa Harbour. The swimming adventure allows only 12 swimmers per vessel, so you'll have more chances to come face to face with these adorable dolphins. If you'd rather stay dry, you can choose to watch these cute marine mammals splash in the water with other passengers.

Akaroa Harbour itself is the flooded crater of an extinct volcano, set within picturesque Banks Peninsula. Apart from the huge and awe-inspiring volcanic cliffs, this also means that the harbour is very sheltered. A lot of the time, especially in summer, your dolphin encounter will be inside the sheltered harbour. This dolphin swim experience is rated as one of the top 10 marine mammal encounters in the world by Lonely Planet!

  • Q:What if I suffer from sea sickness?
A:Hi there, thank you for your question. If you are prone to suffer from sea-sickness we advise taking an anti-sea-sickness tablet before checking in for your swim. Different varieties take different amounts of time to start working so make sure you give yourself this time before heading out on the water. Pressure point wrist bands will be provided as well, however it is best to attempt to stop the potential sea-sickness before it starts. If you have any other questions, please feel free to send an email to service@kootrip.com. Kind regards, Hilary
  • Q:Can I touch these dolphins?
A:Hi there, thank you for your question. No. These dolphins have extremely sensitive skin and a slight touch may bruise or hurt the dolphin. A nail may scratch the surface of their skin causing infections. If you have any other questions, please feel free to send an email to service@kootrip.com. Kind regards, Hilary
