What to Expect

  • Enjoy views of mysterious and beautiful Inferno Crater which rises and falls as it heats and cools. See the delicate sinter terraces growing from minerals solidifying out of the hot spring water. Waimangu Volcanic Valley is home to Frying Pan Lake, one of the largest hot water springs in the World. 


  • Brilliantly coloured microbes cloak the hot rocks. Tiny springs and geysers play. Immerse yourself amongst the rare and unusual plants that grow on the hot earths of Waimangu, amongst the regenerating native forests.

  • Duration: 1 hour
  • Difficulty/Other Info. : Moderate downhill and flat. There are steps up to Inferno Crater.  Suitable for most levels of fitness.
  • Highlights : Panoramas over the valley, the Southern Crater, regenerating forest, Frying Pan Lake, Cathedral Rocks, rare plants, hot springs, Inferno Crater Lake, Silica Terraces and stalactites
  • Departure Info : Last admission: 15.30 for 17.00 close, except during January - 16.30 for 18.00 close

Full walk to the Lake


  • From - to : Waimangu Entrance to Bus Stop 3

  • Distance: 4.0km
  • Duration : 1 hour 45 min
  • Difficulty/Other Info. : Flat from Bus Stop 2. Suitable for most levels of fitness.
  • Highlights : The full 4km walk allows you to experience all Waimangu Volcanic Valley has to offer, including wonderful panoramas over the valley, Southern Crater, Emerald Lake, regenerating forest, Frying Pan Lake, Cathedral Rocks, rare plants, hot springs, Inferno Crater Lake, silica terraces and stalactites. There is excellent bird watching along this trail.
  • Departure Info :  Last admission: 14.50 for 17.00 close, except during January - 15.50 for 18.00 close

Drivers and Cyclists

  • Travel south of Rotorua on State Highway 5 (the Rotorua-Taupo Highway) look out for the Waimangu Volcanic Valley road signs approximately 14kms after leaving Rotorua.Turn left into Waimangu Road. Then drive 6kms along Waimangu Road to our entrance and car park.Waimangu is approximately 25 minutes drive from the centre of Rotorua City.

  • Go North from Taupo on State Highway 5, continue on SH5 past the intersection with SH38 and take the next turn right onto Waimangu Road. (There is a Waimangu road sign 300 mtrs before the SH5 / Waimangu Road intersection). Then drive 6km along Waimangu road into our car park. Waimangu is approximately 50 minutes drive from the centre of Taupo township.

  •  For Hiking, good walking shoes with treaded soles are necessary.
