A true Maxi vessel, Southern Cross is a racing legend, being built for the America's Cup Yacht Race as Australia's fourth challenger and the winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup. Today, while Southern Cross still holds the spirit of a racing yacht, she has had considerable modifications to make her more comfortable, with features such as a shaded cockpit, comfortable cushioned deck area and downstairs lounge area and guest bathroom. Southern Cross carries 22 guests and promises an unforgettable sailing experience for those with only one day to see the Whitsundays.

This Whitsundays sailing tour is perfect for families, couples, groups of friends, time-savvy travellers and those on a budget who are looking for a fun action-packed tour. Your exciting itinerary includes a visit to the famous Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet Lookout, an incredible snorkel over some of the best reefs in the world and a delicious lunch on-board. Sample itinerary:

Your 1-day sailing adventure begins at 8:00 am, departing from Abell Point Marina. You'll immediately set sail across the Whitsunday Passage where you will pass by many of the Whitsunday Islands, including the beautiful Hook Island. Next you will arrive at Tongue Bay around 11:00 am. Enjoy some time on the beach before making your way up to Hill Inlet Lookout - one of the most photographed points in all of Australia. You will get to see the stunning swirling sands below with waters abundant with stingrays, shark pups and sunbathers! 

Afterwards, you'll head on down to northern end of the famous Whitehaven Beach, where you can relax and enjoy the warm blue waters and silica sands. After some quality beach time, it is time to head back to Southern Cross for lunch. Afterwards sail over to Dumbell Island, where guests will have time for a snorkel and swim on the amazing coral reefs, checking out the local marine life. Set sail back to land and arrive back at the marina around 5:30 pm.

(Please note this a sample itinerary only. Itineraries are flexible and will differ depending on weather conditions and tides. Itineraries are planned by the Captain considering the safety and wellbeing of guests and crew. Sometimes, the tour does not make it to Hill Inlet, however there are terrific alternate itineraries available.)

Boat Layout:

Southern Cross is a 68ft sail boat designed for cutting through the water at speed. With seating for everyone on deck, she is able to accommodate up to 22 guests at a time for a fun day of exploring the Whitsundays. Southern Cross has an onboard bathroom, downstairs lounge area, and shaded cockpit, ensuring guests' comfort during their day on the water.

  • Please note this tour is conducted in English. To fully enjoy the tour and engage with your fellow passengers, we recommend this tour for passengers who are comfortable communicating in English.

  • You should be a competent swimmer to take part in this tour.

  • Tour duration: Depart 8:00 am, return at 5:30 pm (approximate times)

  • This tour only operates on most Australian holidays.

  • This activity requires a minimum of 8 people to proceed. If the tour is cancelled due to lack of numbers, you will have the option of an alternative date or a full refund.

  • If you have any dietary requirements, please let us know at the time of booking.

  • If you have any medical conditions, please let us know at the time of booking.

  • Please note that most trips will still depart if rain is forecasted, with showers generally passing quite quickly. In the case of a storm or high wind warning, it is at the discretion of the skipper to cancel the trip. Guests will be notified as soon as possible and will be issued a refund if an alternate arrangement cannot be made.

  • If your boat is unable to sail due to mechanical issues or any other reason than the weather, you will have the option of another suitable vessel or being issued with a refund.

  • We recommend purchasing travel insurance which includes covers for this tour. We recommend that your travel insurance includes cover for illness, injury, loss or damage to personal belongings and not being able to travel on the confirmed date of departure.

  • Please note that luggage cannot be stored a the Explore Whitsundays store. We recommend contacting your Airlie Beach hotel or storing your luggage at Airlie Beach Bag Storage (350 Shute Harbour Road, Airlie Beach).

  • Please note that a $20 AUD to $40 AUD per person Public Holiday Surcharge is applicable to tours where the vessel is at sea on Christmas Day or New Year's Day.

Cancellation rules:
  • 25% payment fee will be charged for cancellation or revision made at 9 days before use.
  • 50% payment fee will be charged for cancellation or revision made at 5-8 days before use.
  • No cancellation or revision within 4 days before use.
  • If you do not show up at the required time, you will be considered to have forfeited your booking and will not be entitled to a refund.
